A new eight-foot-tall golden statue by Pakistani American artist Shahzia Sikander now stands on the roof of the state courthouse in New York’s Flatiron district.

SUMMARY

The “NOW” statue, with curling braids and tentacle-like arms rises from a lotus flower, was created to pay homage to Ruth Bader Ginsberg and her fight for abortion. Passersby have noted the “demonic” look to the statue, and how it made them feel uncomfortable or ill at ease. The sculpture is scheduled to be removed in June of 2023 when it will head to Houston, Texas.
